Some stories can benefit from the use of fears & phobias:
Below are some suggestions… can you think of other good ones?

Fear of water/unable to swim/floods/depth of water
Drowning/unable to breathe
Unable to distinguish what is in the water with you(blindness)
Unknown creatures in the water
Dark/sunset/night/slime/shadows/moon/decaying matter/injury
Trembling/strangers/nakedness/disease
“Lost inside a house under water (lost sense of direction)
Claustrophobia (narrow places)/enclosed space (locked in)
Separation from family and friends (alone)
Can’t hear well in water, something coming/motion
Fear of noise(s), pain, wild animals, sharp or pointed objects
Being scratched, spiders/snakes/insects/reptiles/worms
Fainting, muscular incoordination, vertigo, precipices
Extreme temperature/environment, insanity, demons
Dizziness/double vision, accidents, explosions/fire/electrical shock
Blood, fog, tied up/tangled up/weeds/ropes/etc.
Death/buried alive, extreme weather(tornado, hail, wind, ice, etc.)
